In Tilburg I played in small clubs for €150 per evening, two or three times a week. During the day I worked at a clothing store to make ends meet. At 24 I was booked for a sunset set at Café Mambo on Ibiza. That one evening changed everything — the energy, the audience, the magic of music at sunset over the sea. I decided to stay.

The reality of living on Ibiza is raw. In high season (May-October) everything is extremely expensive: a studio costs €1,200 per month and a coffee €5. In low season that drops to €650 and €2.50. I've learned to think seasonally: in summer I earn the bulk of my income, in winter I produce music and live frugally. My annual income as an autónomo fluctuates around €32,000.

The autónomo system was a challenge. As a DJ and musician I fall under the category actividades artísticas. The registration at the Agencia Tributaria required a specific epígrafe (activity code). My gestoría on Ibiza — specialized in the entertainment industry — helped me with the modelo 036 and the alta at the Seguridad Social. The tarifa plana of €80 per month was a lifesaver in the first year.

Ibiza outside the season is a different island. Quiet, green, with hippy markets and small villages. The local population — the ibicencos — are hospitable but protect their culture against overtourism. I live in Santa Eulària des Riu, a quiet village on the east coast. Here everyone knows everyone. The baker knows I want a cortado and the neighbor gives me oranges from his garden.

The music community on Ibiza is incredible: producers, DJs, singers and sound engineers from all over the world. In winter we organize jam nights and studio sessions. I've learned more about music production here than in four years of conservatory in the Netherlands. The connections you make lead to gigs in Barcelona, Berlin and London.

My biggest lesson: Ibiza is not just a party. It's a business machine. Clubs like Pacha, Amnesia and Ushuaïa work with strict contracts and expect professionalism. You need your taxes in order, file your IRPF return, and submit your modelo 130 quarterly returns. Anyone who thinks the island is one big party won't last a year. Anyone who approaches it as a serious career finds something magical here.
